Fashion by Numbers; Varsity

Sporty luxe is back for this upcoming spring/summer but with an American College twist. The varsity vibe is the new spin on last seasons sporty trend which has been inspired by the classic American college football and baseball uniforms. More extreme than the traditional sporty luxe which has slowly evolved over the last season. If you are ever going to try this trend nows the time as it is more accessible and affordable than ever.

Block number tees are one of the most affordable ways to inject this trend into your wardrobe. CottonOn, ASOS and TopShop have their shelves stocked with tees in a range of colours and styles for under $50. Worn alongside a pair of ripped boyfriend or super skinny jeans and with a pair of sneakers to complete your weekend look. Here’s my favourites varsity look:

My (toned-down) Varsity Style

When channeling this look, think black, white and a splash of your favourite bold sports team colour, red, green or blue, oversized tees with block numbers or two-tone baseball style tops. For those that are younger at heart; backpacks and beanies can create a look with an edge.

Varsity is weekend casual at its best, definitely a trend to try this weekend.

Gym Wear as Street Wear #Healthies

People everywhere are now wearing their gym clothes on the street with pride. Gone are the days when we used to hurry home to change in-between our morning gym session and the grocery or cafe stop off. With workout wear retailers enabling this style trend to take off, such as LuluLemon, Stella McCartney for Adidas, Lorna Jane and of course who could forget Nike with their fluro sneaker series. It can make even the biggest exercise skeptic want to hit the pavement in the latest style trend.

As with most trends social media is pivotal in its escalation, now our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram feeds are inundated with gym ‘selfies’. ‘Healthies’ are the new ‘selfie’ and I have been known to take one or two of my own.

The ‘Healthie’ is the new ‘Selfie’

And celebs are no different. Celebrities are no longer simply attributing their fab figures to good genes, promoting their workout sessions and diets. Charlotte Dawson and Ricki-Lee Coulter, are a couple of my favourites who a big fan of a ‘healthie’ or two, they work hard for that banging body and are not afraid to shout it from the rooftops. Waking up at 5am to hit the gym is a big deal and takes serious commitment. Being healthy and active has grown into a new status symbol and is now an aspirational lifestyle.

By increasing the social profile of health through celeb and peer health-spiration we are hopefully empowering a savvier, smarter and more active population. Health is now a style commodity, so promote those ‘healthies’ and don’t be afraid to flaunt that gym gear.

Weekend Style Edit

From Monday to Friday, patent black pumps, the two piece suit or a polished pencil skirt may complete your workday look, but whatever you are wearing during your work week it’s unlikely that you want to continue that same look throughout the weekend. For me, those clothes can remind me of work and put me in that corporate mindset, you almost need to have two separate styles one for work and one for play.

More often than not your weekend look is more casual and comfortable than your traditional work-wardrobe. But while your weekend look can be relaxed, it should never be sloppy. If you are grocery shopping, walking up the street to grab a coffee, or running a quick errand, you never know who you will bump in to and if you have my luck you always do when you are looking your worst. I have been there quite a few times; slightly sheepish and embarrassed with my greasy hair hidden under a baseball cap, pulled low over my face like I am hiding from the paparazzi, boyfriends oversized jumper with sweats or that out of shape t-shirt you have been meaning to throw out. Weekends are fun, so let your outfits amplify that feeling no matter what your signature style is.
